Description
Chateau Giscours Margaux Grand Cru Classe 2014(RP92)
The 2014 Giscours has come on leaps and bounds since I tasted it twice in barrel. It is clearly more sophisticated and complex than the du Tertre on the nose. For a start, there is more fruit concentration with red cherries, raspberry and blackcurrant laced with cedar and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, pure red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit with a precise finish that the property never used to be able to offer. This is a lovely Margaux that should drink well for 20 years. RP
The estate
Located on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Château Giscours is a historic property in the Margaux appellation, with vines first planted in the 16th century. This superb Margaux 3rd Cru Classé is a true flagship of the Bordeaux region, with its distinctive neoclassical palace architecture, its park of rare species and its buildings, including the beautiful "Ferme Suzanne." Since 1995, Château Giscours has entered a new era in its history following its acquisition by the Albada Jelgersma family.
The vineyard
Château Giscours is a Margaux wine produced from 95 hectares of vines out of a total of 300 hectares. A real jewel, the special feature of the Château Giscours terroir lies in the presence of 3 deep Garonne gravel ridges, which play a decisive role in the grapes' ripening cycle. This 2014 vintage stems from an exceptional terroir including 15% of vines aged between 4 and 10 years of age, 50% vines aged between 10 and 25 and 33% more than 25 years old.
