Chateau Musar White Blend Bekaa Valley 2010

Made from grapes and vines for seven years, Chateau Musar White is a blend of ancient grape varieties Obaideh and Merwah, native to the mountains of Lebanon and said to be related to Chasselas Chardonnay and Semillon. The Obaideh vineyards are located in the foothills of the Anti-Lebanon Mountains, on stony chalk soils, while the Merwah vineyards are on the seaward side of the Lebanon Mountains, on calcareous gravel. The yield of these untrained bushes is very low: 10-20 hectares per hectare. At high altitudes (about 1400m) they are still in a world of this caliber and they are still on their own feet.

The 2010 vintage was partly fermented and aged for 9 months in new oak barrels and partly in stainless steel barrels at a temperature between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius. Typically, Obaideh has a higher alcohol content than Merwah, but they balance each other out in the blend – however, This year, both are lower in alcohol (Merwah 11.5%) and when it is lower it tends to dominate the Obaideh, so even though it is only 40% of the blend, it is more pronounced

It is bright lemon in color with pear, thyme, pine resin and lemongrass on the nose. On the palate it is oily but has a spicy citric acidity on the finish. Herbal, pine and citrus notes - a unique white vintage with excellent aging potential. The cellar is fine and it will last for decades.
