Marques de Vargas Reserva 2015
In 1840, Don Felipe de la Mata, the eighth Marquis of Vargas, decided to plant the first vines in Hacienda Pradolagar. Since then, four generations of the family have planted the vineyards on the estate.
Don Pelayo de la Mata, Count of San Cristobal, and his brother Don Francisco, 9th Marquess of Vargas, were elected mayors of Logroño, and their passion for the Prado Laga vines has remained with.
A particularly prominent figure is Don Hilario de la Mata, the tenth Marquis of Vargas and father of the current Marquis, as he was the head of an important winemaking group Chairman, also a partner in another firm in the industry.
Like his predecessors, Don Hilario is a wine world enthusiast who has always dreamed of owning his own winery and making wine under the family name. Sadly, he passed away at a very young age, not being able to see his dreams come true.
In 1989, Don Pelayo de la Mata, the 11th Marquis of Vargas, and his siblings saw their father's dream come true with today's winery built in Logroño, in the heart of Rioja Alta ( Hacienda Pradolagar estate in Logroño.
The selected grapes for our Marqués de Vargas Reserva come from our 50-hectare vineyard "Hacienda Pradolagar". Marqués de Vargas embraces the environmentally friendly philosophy and practice of sustainable viticulture.Our vineyards are free from herbicides and pesticides, and only occasionally organic fertilizers are used.
Wines are made according to traditional methods where traditional methods coexist with state-of-the-art technology. The wine is bottled without any fining or filtration, resulting in an unprocessed, all-natural wine.
Vineyard: 'Pradolagar' (50 hectares of bush vines), average age of vines 35 years, poor, shallow, poor calcareous soils - clay and free draining for moderate vegetative growth
Vinification: classic destemming, fermentation in stainless steel tanks. On 11/13 days, the temperature is controlled between 29-30ºC. Daily re-montage and pumping and long maceration for 12 days post-fermentation to ensure a full-bodied texture
Aging: 20 months in American, French and Russian oak barrels from different cooperages: Seguin Moreau, Demptos and Maury, up to 5 years. 20% of the barrels are updated every year. Regular listings start every 5 months and then every 6 months.
