Description
Nekeas El Chaparral de Vega Sindoa Old Vines
Nekeas is located in the town of Anorbe in the "Val d'Sabe Valley" at the foot of the Pyrenees; it is the most remote of the Navarra appellations.
The winery was established in 1989 by 8 local families whose history has centuries-old ties to the "Valley of Nekeas". The scenic Val di Sabe Valley has long been considered one of the best appellations in Navarra.
Viticulture in the valley dates back to the 15th century but was seriously threatened in 1899 when a plague of phylloxera wiped out 300 hectares of the nearly 400 hectares of vineyards that existed at the time.
In the early 1900s, it destroyed the remaining 100 hectares, save for a few small pieces of Grenache, bottled today as "El Chaparral de Vega Sindoa".
By 1950, much of the plants lost to phylloxera had been replanted, but from the 1960s onwards the area was threatened with disappearing again due to a combination of industrial development, low grape prices and extreme weather conditions.
Bodegas Nekeas became one of the first wineries to bring to life the valley's winemaking tradition.
Nekeas produces a wide range of high quality, great value wines from indigenous grapes and international varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay are planted on trellises, mixed with old vines Grenache and Tempranillo, totaling approximately 260 hectares.
Most of Nekeas' vineyards were planted between 1989 and 1997, with the exception of the "El Chaparral" vineyard, which was planted between 1890 and 1930.
“Bodegas Nekeas is one of the most advanced and modern wineries in northern Navarra. They are doing a lot of experimentation in one of the cooler microclimates of the region. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I repeat, the wines are very cheap .”
Aromas of cranberry, black cherry and flowers. The wine is full bodied, with good acidity, a peppery/licorice flavor and earthy minerality.
