Terroir: Monthélie lies on the hills between the villages of Volnay and Meursault. Its soil is quite poor, consisting primarily of gravelly limestone overlain by red clay and marl. Premier cru vineyards are primarily concentrated on south- and southeast-facing slopes. Due to its proximity to Volnay, the wines produced in this AOC are primarily red, with flavors of red and black berries, sometimes accented by floral notes such as violet and peony. The style resembles the feminine style of Volnay, with fine tannins. The white wines, similar to those of neighboring Meursault, offer notes of lemon and white flowers, along with green apple and fresh hazelnut, creating a delicate and elegant wine.
Vintage: Current owner Loic Dugat, the 13th generation of the estate, joined the estate in 1996 and, after nearly 20 years of hard work, officially took over in 2015. The wines are made with a high percentage of stems, moderate extraction, and a low proportion of new barrels. While inheriting the deep, complex style of his father, Bernard, he also crafts wines that are perfect for young consumption. Besides his renowned reds, lesser-known winemakers also excel at producing impressive white wines!
Monthélie, often referred to as "Little Volnay," is renowned for its elegant, compact, and accessible wines. Most of the vines are planted on south- and southeast-facing slopes, where red clay and marl soils are rich in small gravels.
The winery exudes captivating aromas of peony, undergrowth, and spice, complemented by sumptuous red and black berry fruit. The tannins are delicate, and the finish is long.
