Finn Thomson Aultmore 12 Years Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Wine cask whiskies have become more and more common in the modern world of whisky as access to traditional cask types have become more restricted and new players on the scene look to experiment with different flavour profiles. But the two industries have grown alongside each other for many years.

Indeed our own family story is evidence of this.As well as being whisky blenders, Peter Thomson's were wholesalers of wines from across the globe. A glimpse at an old price list from 1981 shows a range of wines from traditional Bordeauxs to experimental imports from Yugoslavia and even Tunisia. Wine has been at the forefront of our family business for decades so whenever I get the chance to bottle a wine matured whisky I jump at the chance.

This Aultmore has had a full maturation in a Red Wine cask. 12 years of ageing have given incredible balance from a cask type that is notoriously difficult to work with. There are bright red berry notes of strawberry and raspberry that soften on the palate as the creaminess from the oak evolves. This is a rounded and balanced whisky and a tribute to the wine elements of my Grandfather's the industry.

Story

Finn Thomson is a Scotch whisky independent bottler that is 300 years in the making. Since James Thomsons illicit potstill in the 1700s, the Thomson family has pursued a different element of whisky through the ages – distilling, blending, trading, selling – helping to shape the very story of Scotch itself.

With three centuries of family whisky history and personal tutelage from some of the most respected names in the Scottish whisky industry, Finn may stand on the shoulders of giants. But the weight of decision rests on his own.

Finn is responsible for calling the moment when a whisky’s flavours are at their finest; quirks and eccentricities at their most beguiling. Whether it’s a decades-old cask from the family collection or an entirely new creation, this is art as much as science. Wood, water and weather have had their say. The only guides that count now are taste, scent and intuition.
