First Drop Mother’s Milk Shiraz 2022

First Drop is a modern-style winery located in the Barossa Valley of South Australia, known for its lively packaging, characterful wine names, and an easy-drinking, approachable style, with flagship wines such as Mother’s Milk Shiraz and the Fat of the Land series.

The winery was founded in 2004 by two friends, John Retsas and Matt “Gantos” Gant, who set out to make wines “to be drunk, not just judged,” combining approachability with high quality. Its grapes come mainly from the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, but also from sites in McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills to add complexity and layers to the wines.

Aromatically, it shows a core of black fruits such as black cherry, blackberry, and plum, with additional notes of forest floor, spice, licorice, and dark chocolate, plus some floral and subtle mineral nuances that keep the fruit profile from feeling one-dimensional.

On the palate, it offers flavors of ripe black cherry, blackberry, pepper, chocolate, and licorice, with medium acidity and a generally rounded, supple balance; the finish is long and smooth with hints of creaminess and spice, while the body is medium to slightly full, juicy and silky, with ripe, fine-grained tannins.

It pairs well with red meats (grilled steak, lamb racks, burgers, braised beef ribs), BBQ, grilled meats with sweet sauces, and spicy sausages, where the wine’s sweet fruit and spicy character complement and enhance these bold flavors.
