🥃Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cask Strength Batch 007🥃

The 7th release of the popular Cask Strength series from Laphroaig. This bottle was released as in 2015 part of Laphroaig’s 200th anniversary celebrations.

While many whisky brands focus their marketing on qualities such as smoothness and drinkability, Laphroaig have built their reputation on the fact that they produce one of the most distinctive and boldly flavoured whiskies available.

Laphroaig positions itself as ‘the definitive Islay malt’ because it epitomises the classic Islay character. It also claims on the label to be ‘the most richly flavoured of all Scotch whiskies’. This may once have been the case; modern expressions are less extreme. The nose is pungent and smoky (coal smoke), with coal tar soap and iodine. The taste is surprisingly sweet to start, then salty and dry, with billows of tarry smoke and medicinal, seaweed-like flavours. Full-bodied.

Note

Nose: Peat and charcoal with grilled pineapple and bacon. The peat and smoke mellows and gets much sweeter, with vanilla, caramel and oranges.

Taste: Rubber, tar and a touch of iodine. Sour and bitter, with lots of pepper too. There’s some white chocolate and bitter citrus, but all in all the peaty flavours dominate the palate a lot more than they do the nose.

Finish: Tremendous amounts of peat at first, followed by lemon sour. After that the finish is gentler, with long lingering vanilla.
