Description

Balvenie 17 Years Old Peated Cask (43% ABV) was a discontinued experimental peated cask series from Balvenie. It was made with standard Balvenie Speyside unpeated base whisky, then finished in peated casks, making it a rare "lightly peated" single malt in the Speyside category.

Casing: Initially aged in traditional American or sherry casks, then finished in casks that previously held peated whisky (Balvenie's own peated whisky). The smokiness comes from "cask smokers," not from distillation directly from peated malt.

Aroma: Typical Balvenie notes of honey, vanilla, and light fruit (green apple, pear, citrus peel), with very subtle hints of sea salt, smoky gunpowder, and ash. The smokiness is much lighter than typical Islay, a crossover "Speyside + a touch of smoke" flavor.

Palate: Sweet and smooth on the palate, with notes of honey, vanilla, dried fruit, and creamy toffee. The finish slowly reveals smoky, woody, and subtle spice notes, transitioning from sweet to slightly smoky. Low acidity, medium-smooth body.

Finish: Medium-long, ending with sweet spices, honey, woody notes, and a touch of smoke. The smoke is primarily felt in the back of the nose and throat, without being harsh.
