The intensity and freshness of a Patagonia Chardonnay

The estate

Bodega Chacra is located in the heart of the Río Negro region, on the southern tip of Argentina. It was Piero Incisa della Rocchetta who brought this rare gem to life in 2004. The venture began during a tasting in New York, when he discovered a wine that particularly caught his eye: a Pinot Noir from Río Negro. It was a revelation, and he immediately spotted the potential that these terroirs had to offer - ungrafted vines dating from 1932, massal sélections and ideal climatic conditions. Piero Incisa della Rocchetta set sail to create the wines of his dreams in this jewel of nature, which can transmit the taste of "a place on the planet," as he puts it.

The wine

Chacra Chardonnay 2022 is the result of a collaboration between Bodega Chacra and Jean-Marc Roulot, eminent Meursault winemaker.

The vineyard

Bodega Chacra is anchored in the heart of Patagonia's Río Negro region, a land formed by the junction of two rivers, the Limay and the Neuquén. They then extend as far as the eye can see, into the plains and forests, at an altitude of between 290 and 330 metres. It is here, in the heart of this green lung, that the estate thrives, nestling in a natural setting of 24 hectares of vines. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically.

Chacra Chardonnay 2022 comes from a vineyard that is over 40 years old and grows on limestone soil. It is farmed organically and biodynamically.

Winemaking and ageing

65% of the wine is aged in French oak barrels (15% of which are new) and 35% in stoneware jars, for 11 months.

This is probably the finest answer to Puligny or Meursault in Argentina and it will be hard to pass by. Beautiful brioche notes give a fine creaminess with mineral, fine reduction, beeswax and a hint of white sesame to the lemon curd. Extremely textured and tense on the palate with fresh, medium acidity and a long, long finish. This is all about texture and purity. Also intellectual. Drink or hold. From biodynamically grown grapes.
