Description
Bodega Chacra Sin Azufre Rio Negro 2022 (RP94)
The intensity and freshness of a Patagonian red wine
The estate
Bodega Chacra is located in the heart of the Río Negro region, on the southern tip of Argentina. It was Piero Incisa della Rocchetta who brought this rare gem to life in 2004. The venture began during a tasting in New York, when he discovered a wine that particularly caught his eye: a Pinot Noir from Río Negro. It was a revelation, and he immediately spotted the potential that these terroirs had to offer - ungrafted vines dating from 1932, massal sélections and ideal climatic conditions. Piero Incisa della Rocchetta set sail to create the wines of his dreams in this jewel of nature, which can transmit the taste of "a place on the planet," as he puts it.
The wine
This cuvée is a personal project led by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta. It's an experiment in producing wine without relying on science, but rather using the senses: sight, smell and taste.
The vineyard
Bodega Chacra is anchored in the heart of Patagonia's Río Negro region, a land formed by the junction of two rivers, the Limay and the Neuquén. They then extend as far as the eye can see, into the plains and forests, at an altitude of between 290 and 330 metres. It is here, in the heart of this green lung, that the estate thrives, nestling in a natural setting of 24 hectares of vines. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically.
Winemaking and ageing
Fermentation begins spontaneously between the 3rd and 5th day of maceration in 600-litre barrels. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is aged for 11 months in barrels that have already contained at least one wine.

The 2021 Sin Azufre is the no-sulfur-added cuvée of Pinot Noir from organic and biodynamic grapes from vines planted in 1955. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts for 15 days and matured 60% in French oak barrels, 30% in concrete tanks and 10% in clay amphorae for nine months. It's light and fresh with 12% alcohol. The first vintage of this wine in 2013 changed everything, and today all the wines have very little sulfur. The nose is alive and expressive, denoting a living wine with hints of organic earth and tons of flowers and translucent red berries. It's clean, precise and chiseled, with pungent flavor, weightless but full of energy and light, with purity of flavors and symmetry. There are no hints of a wine with no sulfur added. It's just a superb expression of Pinot. Purity without funkiness. 12,000 bottles produced.

Very fresh aromas of cranberries, fresh blueberries, stones, pomegranates, stems, violets and lemon zest. It’s medium-bodied with very fine, powdery tannins. So clean and juicy. Mineral, layered and transparent. Taut finish. Fruit from Cincuenta y Cinco vineyard. No sulfites added.
