Winery Background

López de Heredia is one of Rioja's most traditional and representative family wineries, founded in 1877 and located in Haro. Viña Tondonia is its most famous vineyard and wine series, renowned for its traditional winemaking methods, aging in old American oak barrels, and patient maturation.

Compared to the concentrated, new-barrel style common in modern Rioja, López de Heredia places greater emphasis on acidity, body balance, oxidative maturation, and the layers created by time. Wines are typically aged for an extended period at the winery before release, thus often possessing a certain degree of maturity upon opening.

The 2010 Tondonia was described as concentrated fruit, deep in structure, yet still vibrant; Berry Bros. & Rudd specifically noted its black and red fruit, licorice, ham, leather, vanilla, and nutmeg characteristics, believing the wine was still somewhat tight at the time and had the potential for further aging.

Ratings and Drinking Recommendations

This vintage received several high scores, including 97 points from James Suckling and 96 points from Wine Advocate; the CellarTracker community average is approximately 91.5 points. While different critics slightly varied in their assessment of maturity, it is generally agreed that it is already very drinkable and still has room for further aging.
