Description
Bowmore 17 Years Old 1998 Stillmen's Selection Bordeaux Wine Barrique
Bowmore's celebrated single malt has been distilled on the magical island of Islay, off the west coast of Scotland, ever since 1779. This makes Bowmore the first of Islay's eight distilleries (by chronology certainly and by taste too, many would say).
The role of the stillman calls on Bowmore's unrivalled heritage of whisky alchemy to create our signature complex flavour and exquisite balance.
That said, stillmen are said to have practised their craft on Islay since the 14th Century, running bootleg stills in remote caves hidden from the scrutiny of the excisemen.
Our current stillmen have been here since 1976, progressing from Bowmore's Malt Barns through the Mash House to the Still House. They keep an expert eye on the Spirit Safe, looking out for the Middle Cut or 'heart of the run', the crucial moment when the best part of the distillation leaves the stills.
The heart is passed through to the legendary No.1 Vaults where the whisky is casked. Then begins a period of maturation, which turns the raw spirit into premium single malt whisky.
Hand-selected from Bowmore® distilled on 22nd June 1998 and filled into the finest Bordeaux wine barriques, this whisky was chosen for Stillmen's Selection because of its deep aromatic fruitiness captured first in the Middle Cut and further unlocked by the oak.
A notable addition to our Craftsmen's Collection.
