By Farr Sangreal Pinot Noir 2023
By Farr Sangreal Pinot Noir 2023 is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Geelong region in Victoria, Australia. The estate is run by Gary Farr and his son Nick Farr, who are among Australia’s most celebrated Pinot Noir producers. Sangreal is the oldest and most cherished of the By Farr Pinot Noir vineyards, planted in 1994, and is recognised as a Classified (Second Growth) in Langton’s Classification.
Vinification & Style
Made from 100% Pinot Noir from the Sangreal vineyard, planted in 1994 on a north-facing slope with bluestone and limestone soils, with red ironstone colouring the surface. The 2023 vintage was shaped by a cool, wet spring and a long, gentle ripening period, resulting in the smallest harvest since 2002. The wine is made with whole bunch fermentation, following a cold soak, then fermented naturally before élevage in French oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. The style is perfumed, silky and elegant, with red fruit, whole bunch spice and integrated oak.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep ruby red with brilliant clarity.
Nose: Seductive and highly perfumed, with sour cherry, ripe plum, dried citrus peel, green pepper, cornichon, rose petals, mace, clove, cardamom, and earthy warmth.
Palate: Medium-bodied, silky and structured, with smoked cherries, earth, beet, cedar, twiggy herbs, and red roses. Fine, savoury tannins, vibrant acidity, and a generous depth of flavour.
Finish: Long, elegant and complex, with characters of rust, steel, earth, spice and smoke.
Serving & Pairing
Decanting: Recommended to decant 30–60 minutes before serving.
Serving temperature: 14–16°C.
Food pairing: Roast duck breast with cherry sauce (the wine’s red fruit and spice pair beautifully with the duck’s richness), grilled salmon (the wine’s acidity and fruit balance the fish’s oils), mushroom risotto (the wine’s forest floor and earthy notes complement the mushrooms), Brie or Chaource cheese (the wine’s silky tannins pair well with the cheese’s creaminess). Avoid overly tannic or heavily spiced dishes, which would clash with the wine’s elegance.
Drinking Window
Enjoy from 2025 through approximately 2038. The wine has aging potential of 13+ years under proper cellar conditions.
Origin: Australia, Victoria, Geelong, Moorabool Valley
Type: Red Wine (Still)
Grape: 100% Pinot Noir
ABV: 14%
Volume: 750ml
