Vintage Background and Winemaking Process
2012 Vintage Characteristics: 2012 was a legendary vintage for the Champagne region. Following spring frosts and a rainy summer, abundant autumn sunshine resulted in exceptionally ripe and healthy grapes. Although the yield was low, the quality was outstanding, hailed by many wine critics as "one of the best vintages in the last twenty years."
Grape Origin: Grapes were carefully selected from 11 Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages (Oger, Vertus, Chouilly, Cuis, Verzy, Aÿ, Ludes, Ambonnay, Tauxières, Avenuey, and Les Riceys). The Pinot Noir from Les Riceys contributes a unique layering of red berries and spices.
Blending Ratio: 62% Pinot Noir (providing ripe red fruit and body) and 38% Chardonnay (offering citrus freshness and minerality), with 9% still red wine added for color.
Aging: Approximately 8–10 years aging on lees (disgorgement in 2021), with a dosage of approximately 9 g/L (Brut level).
👃 Tasting Notes
Color: An elegant copper-gold color with orange-red hues, exhibiting fine, dense, and persistent bubbles like pearls.
Nose: Complex and layered aromas, exuding sweet fruitiness of wild strawberry, blueberry, pomegranate, raspberry jam, blood orange, and candied mandarin peel, interwoven with deep notes of roasted nuts, brioche, coffee, vanilla, white pepper, licorice, black tea, and chalky minerality.
Palate: Full-bodied and rounded on the palate with a well-structured body, offering a vibrant blend of sweet, ripe red fruit (strawberry, raspberry, blueberry), candied mandarin, grapefruit peel, and nectarine flavors supported by bright acidity. The mid-palate reveals a complex interplay of spices (white pepper, licorice, cinnamon), crème brûlée, roasted nuts, dark chocolate, and a savory minerality. The tannins are silky fine, and the mousse is creamy smooth, combining power and elegance.
Finish: The finish is long and clean, leaving lingering notes of dried red fruit, spices, chalky savory flavors, licorice, and a slightly bitter citrus peel aftertaste. Overall, it's both sweet and savory, making it a highly versatile wine for food pairing.
