Château Laroque Winery Introduction

Château Laroque is located in Saint-Émilion on the right bank of Bordeaux, France, and is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé. The winery sits on a limestone plateau at a higher elevation in Saint-Émilion, with approximately 61 hectares of vineyards. The soil consists of reddish-brown clay, Asteria limestone, and fine clay with bluish hues; some vines are over 50 years old.

The winery is owned by the Beaumartin family, and winemaking is overseen by David Suire. In recent years, Château Laroque has been considered a winery in Saint-Émilion that has regained attention from the market and wine critics, its style combining the fresh minerality of limestone soil with the full-bodied fruitiness of Merlot.

2019 Vintage Overview

Château Laroque 2019, a blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé dominated by Merlot, yet retaining excellent acidity and a mineral structure. The grapes were hand-harvested, fermented separately by plot in small concrete tanks, and aged using a gentle maceration and low-oxidation method to preserve the purity of the fruit and the characteristics of the limestone terroir.

The aromas are concentrated on blackcurrant, blueberry, blackberry, red cherry, and violet, with hints of licorice, coffee, cocoa, and subtle spice. On the palate, the fruit flavors are bright and layered, with a medium to full body. Merlot contributes to the roundness, while Cabernet Franc adds floral, spicy, and structural notes.

The focus of the 2019 vintage is not on excessive weight, but rather on achieving a balance between power and restraint. The wine possesses a refreshing savory quality and a limestone minerality, with smooth, powdery tannins and a long finish.
