Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2017

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande (Pichon Lalande for short) is located in Pauillac on the left bank of Bordeaux, France, and is a Second Growth (Grand Cru Classé) in the 1855 classification. The estate is renowned for its elegance, floral aromas, fine tannins, and the classic structure of Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2017 vintage is fresh, precise, and possesses aging structure.

2017 Vintage Overview

The 2017 Pichon Lalande is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, with an alcohol content of approximately 13.1%. It was aged for 18 months in approximately 60% new French oak barrels. Only about half of the production from this vintage went to the grand vin, reflecting the estate's rigorous quality selection process.

The wine is a medium to deep garnet purple in color. Aromas include lilac, lavender, blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry, black plum, rose, forest floor notes, iron ore, cinnamon, star anise, and black tea. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with pure and concentrated fruit flavors, fine, smooth, and dynamic tannins; the Pauillac notes of graphite, pencil lead, tobacco, and gravelly earth are clearly visible, culminating in a long and vibrant finish.

While 2017 wasn't the most intense vintage, Pichon Lalande's strength lies precisely in its balance of fruit purity, floral notes, acidity, and structure. It's lighter than the 2015 vintage, but more precise, elegant, and in the classic Pauillac style; it's drinkable now, but decanting is recommended for a more complete and fulfilling aging experience.
