Château Troplong Mondot Winery Introduction

Château Troplong Mondot is located in Saint-Émilion on the right bank of Bordeaux, France, and belongs to the Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé B. The winery is situated in the highlands of Saint-Émilion, with soils primarily composed of clay-limestone, and its style is known for the full-bodied fruitiness, fine tannins, and minerality of Merlot. The 2013 vintage, spearheaded by the late winemaker Christine Valette, is considered one of the most outstanding wines of that year.

2013 Vintage Description

Château Troplong Mondot 2013 is a blend of 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc, with an alcohol content of approximately 13%. The wine's color ranges from deep purplish-red to garnet red, with concentrated and layered aromas of blueberry, blackberry, black cherry, wild berries, black chocolate, coconut, mint, white pepper, spices, and a hint of smoky oak.

On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine with concentrated, intense fruit flavors and fine, structured tannins. Bright acidity brings out limestone minerality and a savory character. Robert Parker describes it as one of the few rich, concentrated, and deep wines of 2013, with notes of blueberry, blackcurrant liqueur, chalky minerality, and good concentration, estimating it could age for 10–15 years. James Suckling describes it as firm, powerful, precise, and exceptionally well-made.

While the 2013 vintage is generally leaner, Troplong Mondot's strength lies precisely in its balance between fruit purity, acidity, and structure. It is fuller and more concentrated than the typical 2013 vintage, but fresher and more approachable than the estate's warmer years. It is drinkable now, with even better results after decanting; with proper storage, it still has medium to long-term aging potential.
