Château La Lagune 2008 (RP93)(JS94)

Château La Lagune is located in France, Bordeaux, Haut-Médoc, and is a 3ème Grand Cru Classé (Third Growth) in the 1855 classification. The estate is renowned for its delicate, elegant style, distinctive gravel terroir, and organic sustainable viticulture. The 2008 vintage is regarded as one of the classic Left Bank vintages in Bordeaux; this La Lagune displays layers of blackcurrant, cedar, camphor, truffle, white chocolate and graphite. It has medium-to-full body, silky texture, and is both elegant and powerful, with a character that sits between Pomerol and Graves — substantial yet refined.

Vinification & Style

Château La Lagune is produced in France, Bordeaux, Haut-Médoc, under AOC Haut-Médoc, and is classified as 3ème Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. The 2008 blend is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant, with Merlot and around 15% Petit Verdot, plus small amounts of Cabernet Franc depending on the lot. Published information highlights approximately 15% Petit Verdot, reflecting the estate's generous use of minor varieties. The wine is matured in French oak for about 18 months, with around 50–60% new barrels, giving cedar, toast, vanilla and spice while retaining the Left Bank's characteristic floral notes, silkiness and fine line.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep ruby/purple, intense and bright with a glossy sheen, reflecting the ripeness and concentration of the 2008 vintage.
Nose: Blackcurrant, camphor, truffle, white chocolate, graphite, blackcurrant, black cherry, cedar, tobacco leaf, spice and hints of cocoa and coffee — a rich, complex nose with Haut-Médoc's characteristic floral elegance.
Palate: Medium-to-full body, with fresh black and red fruit, and ripe but still firm tannins; acidity keeps the fruit, wood and spice in balance, with a silky texture. Mid-palate reveals cedar, tobacco, black pepper, cassis, graphite and a touch of coffee, giving a rich, elegant impression but with La Lagune's typical finesse.
Finish: Long, with black fruit, floral notes, cedar and spice, and tannins still present but beginning to soften; further bottle age will round it out further.

Reviews & Accolades

Robert Parker (Wine Advocate): 93 — “Possesses the character between Pomerol and Graves, substantial yet refined and elegant, with the finesse of a female winemaker.”

James Suckling: 94 — “The 2008 La Lagune shows sweet cassis, camphor, truffle and white chocolate, with medium-to-full body and a dense, silky texture – one of the most beautiful wines of the vintage.”
Former senior editor at Wine Spectator, now founder of JamesSuckling.com, widely followed by wine lovers.

Decanter (Jane Anson): 94 — “The 2008 La Lagune is an elegant, intense and powerful vintage, showing the delicacy and structure of a Left Bank pearl, with fresh fruit, full body and a long finish.”
UK authoritative wine media, highly respected by wine lovers and estates worldwide.

Farr Vintners: “one of the most beautiful wines of the vintage” — “The 2008 La Lagune is dark ruby/purple, with sweet cassis, camphor, truffle and white chocolate, medium-to-full body and dense silky texture.”

Other professional notes describe the 2008 as “very dark and shiny, fresh, spicy nose, very sweet start, round but a little chewy, with a green note on the finish”; consensus is that the wine is approachable now yet ageworthy (15+ years), and it remains a well-regarded Haut-Médoc estate.
