Dog Point Winery Introduction

Dog Point Vineyard, located in Marlborough, New Zealand's South Island, is one of the region's oldest boutique wineries, founded by Ivan Sutherland and James Healy. The two had previously worked on vineyards and winemaking in Cloudy Bay before establishing Dog Point in the 1990s, focusing on expressing the characteristics of Marlborough vineyards with minimal intervention.

The winery's Pinot Noir primarily comes from the clay slopes of the Southern Valleys, with some vines planted as early as 1983. Dog Point employs organic farming, hand-harvesting, and natural yeast fermentation, emphasizing the balance between ripe fruit flavors and earthy, spicy, and floral aromas.

2020 Vintage Description

Dog Point Pinot Noir 2020 is a medium-bodied Marlborough Pinot Noir with delicate and structured aromas. After being chilled overnight, the grapes were hand-selected, with approximately 70% destemmed and 30% left whole. Fermentation was then carried out for about three weeks in small, open stainless steel fermentation tanks using 100% wild yeast. Following this, the grapes were aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with about 30% of the barrels being new. The grapes were not clarified or filtered before bottling.

The 2020 harvest was warm and dry, with rainfall from January to April only about 45 mm, 30% below average. This dry weather, combined with patience and precise judgment during harvest, allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness while retaining acidity and aroma.

The aroma is dominated by wild strawberry, red cherry, raspberry, and violet, with hints of smoke, nutmeg, thyme, dried vanilla, hazelnut, and bark. On the palate, bright red fruit flavors are presented, paired with smooth, fine tannins. French oak provides spice and a slight toasty note, but does not mask the inherent floral and fruity notes of Pinot Noir.

Overall, it possesses a distinctive, elegant style with wild layers, rather than being overly rich or overly sweet. The wine is slightly firm when young, becoming more open after decanting; professional critics believe it has medium to long-term aging potential, with an ideal drinking window between 2024 and 2032.
