Domaine de Villeneuve Pic Saint-Loup La Sorbiere Rouge 2019
Domaine de Villeneuve is a family‑run estate in the flagship Languedoc appellation of Pic Saint-Loup, known for hand‑harvesting, single‑site cuvées and extended aging to showcase its limestone hillside terroir. La Sorbière Rouge is one of the domaine’s key AOP Pic Saint-Loup reds, a Syrah‑led blend with Grenache and Mourvèdre; the 2019 vintage comes in at 15.5% ABV, offering a rich, powerful profile of dark fruit, spice and garrigue herbs with solid structure and aging potential.
Vinification & Style
Origin: France, Languedoc, Pic Saint-Loup AOP.
Grapes: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, in line with Pic Saint-Loup requirements that emphasize Syrah for reds.
Terroir: Pic Saint-Loup features limestone‑rich, marl and dolomitic soils at relatively high elevations, with pronounced diurnal temperature shifts, helping preserve acidity and aromatics in a warm Mediterranean climate; wines are noted for dark fruits and garrigue (thyme, rosemary, bay) character.
Winemaking: Long maceration in tank, followed by around 24 months of aging in a mix of stainless steel and 225L French oak barrels, bringing polished tannins, roasted notes and vanilla, and supporting roughly a decade of cellar life.
ABV: 15.5% for the 2019 vintage.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep purple‑ruby with bright edges and thick legs, indicating high ripeness and extract.
Nose: Ripe blackberries, blackcurrant and black‑cherry jam with plums and dark berries, layered with southern French garrigue herbs (thyme, rosemary, bay), liquorice, black pepper and nutmeg; oak adds roasted coffee, cocoa, tobacco and a touch of vanilla.
Palate: Full‑bodied and concentrated. The attack is packed with ripe black fruits and red berry compote, supported by medium‑plus acidity and firm but ripe, slightly powdery tannins. Mid‑palate shows black pepper, liquorice, fennel seed, dried herbs and roasted‑meat notes, along with vanilla and subtle toast from the oak; dense yet relatively polished.
Finish: Long, with lingering black fruit, liquorice, vanilla and garrigue herbs, plus a warm alcoholic glow and hints of dark chocolate and spice.
Serving & Pairing
Decanting: For 2019, decant 1–2 hours before serving.
Serving temperature: 16–18°C.
Food pairing (Hong Kong–friendly)
Special Info: Pic Saint-Loup is widely regarded as one of Languedoc’s most serious and ageworthy appellations, with Syrah‑based blends often likened to a “southern cousin” of the Northern Rhône in structure and aromatic complexity. La Sorbière Rouge 2019, with long maceration, two years of aging and 15.5% ABV, is very much a food‑driven, cellar‑worthy southern French red built for hearty cuisine and patient drinkers.
