Domaine Faiveley Meursault Premier Cru Charmes 2021
Domaine Faiveley Meursault Premier Cru Charmes 2021 is a Premier Cru white Burgundy from the Les Charmes-Dessus climat within the Meursault appellation in Côte de Beaune. The wine is produced by Domaine Faiveley, one of Burgundy’s largest and most respected family-owned estates, based in Nuits-Saint-Georges and led by the 7th generation of the Faiveley family.
Vinification & Style
Made from 100% Chardonnay, this wine comes from the renowned Les Charmes-Dessus Premier Cru climat, known for its shallow, stony soils over limestone bedrock. The wine is aged for 14 months in French oak barrels (one-third new oak), with regular bâtonnage (lees stirring). The 2021 vintage in Burgundy was cool and classic, marked by frost and rain, but the wines show increased freshness, purity of fruit and more judicious use of oak.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Brilliant pale gold with greenish glimmers.
Nose: Complex and expressive, with delicate floral aromas, ripe pear, honeydew melon, white flowers, toasted almonds, vanilla bean and subtle woody notes.
Palate: Full-bodied and rich, with a creamy texture and flavors of juicy peach, lemon curd, citrus and mineral freshness. The wine harmoniously combines balance, liveliness and persistence.
Finish: Long and lingering, with brioche, ripe stone fruits and precise mineral notes.
Professional Reviews
James Suckling: 95 points – This great Chardonnay marries exceptional freshness and minerality with the generosity associated with this famous site. Medium-bodied with excellent mineral energy that lifts and animates. The long, citrusy finish is very precise. Still quite young. From organically grown grapes. Fermented and matured in barrique casks, one-third new.
Jancis Robinson: 16.5+/20 – Sweet, almost raspberry hard-candy/boiled-sweet nose. Very approachable for such a young grand cru! Really quite remarkable.
Burghound (Allen Meadows): 90–93 points – Rich, dense nose with a real edge of excitement. Actually quite amazing richness in this medium weight wine.
Serving & Pairing
Decanting: No decanting required; open 15–20 minutes before serving.
Serving temperature: 11–13°C.
Food pairing: Oysters, grilled scallops, steamed fish, butter-poached lobster, sushi, sashimi, roast chicken, creamy pasta, mushroom dishes, Comté cheese and dishes with subtle butter or cream sauces.
Drinking Window
Enjoy from approximately 2026 through 2035–2040. With bottle age, the wine should develop more honeyed, nutty, brioche and mineral complexity.
