Domaine Stephane Magnien Morey Saint Denis Grains Fins 2017

Grains Fins is made from grapes from two Premiere Crus (Les Gruenchers and Clos Baulet) located in the middle of the Morey Saint-Denis slopes. This is a light, full-bodied wine that is immediately restrained. But wait—after an hour in the glass, aromas of dark fruits, smoked tea, game, and herbs emerge. Flavors of red berries and earth with a mineral edge held in place by tannins. Complex and tight, but not rigid. But I still want to eat something. For example, roast duck leg and salad with mustard sauce.

Stephane Magnien has been called Burgundy’s “rising star” and makes wines of exceptional quality with beautiful openness and rich aromas. Fresh, clean and elegant wines that fully reflect the character and minerality of the terroir. And, it’s hard not to get excited when you’ve got some really nice fields in your area too!

Magnien currently owns 4.5 hectares in the Cotes de Nuits region between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny. The vineyard has been around since the French Revolution in 1789 and has been owned by the Magnien family for four generations. You don’t follow the trends of the generation but maintain traditional practices. Therefore, words like ecology and biodynamics mean nothing to Magnien. Work is always done in a completely traditional way: starting with tilling and plowing the land, herbicides are never used and the plants are allowed to grow without unnecessary human intervention. Treat insect infestations like you would anything else, and be very patient when making wine, and don’t use fining or other tricks to make the wine look like something it isn’t.
