Douglas Laing Rock Oyster Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 4.5L
Rock Oyster (later rebranded as Rock Island) is Douglas Laing’s Islands representative in their Remarkable Regional Malts range, a blended malt crafted from single malts from the Scottish islands of Arran, Jura, Orkney and Islay. Non‑chill filtered, naturally coloured and bottled at around 46.8% ABV, it is designed as a maritime whisky packed with sea breeze, salt, seaweed, citrus and a touch of peat smoke — here in a bar‑friendly 4.5L format.
Production & Style
Origin: Scotland, Islands.
Type: Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (only single malts, no grain whisky).
Component malts: Undisclosed individual distilleries, but confirmed to include island single malts from Arran, Jura, Orkney and Islay, aiming to capture a distinctly maritime, coastal style with gentle peat.
Bottling: Non‑chill filtered, natural colour, bottled at 46.8% ABV (check your bottle if a different strength is specified).
Tasting Notes
Colour: Pale gold to light champagne, with a bright, slightly oily appearance.
Nose: Sea spray, brine and seaweed lead, followed by peat smoke, iodine hints, cracked pepper and ginger, over a base of buttery biscuits, barley malt, honey and lemon zest, evoking grilled seafood on a sea shore.
Palate: Medium‑bodied and oily. Salty coastal notes and peat smoke arrive first, with flavours reminiscent of shellfish, oysters, scallops and smoked mussels, alongside cereal biscuits, honey, ginger and white pepper spice. Mid‑palate brings fresh lemon juice over seafood, light summer fruits (peach, apricot), vanilla and heather honey, with sweet‑and‑salty interplay.
Finish: Long, smoky and briny, with lingering sea salt, seaweed, honeyed malt, pepper and a touch of citrus peel bitterness; very maritime and moreish.
Reviews & Impressions
Whisky writers consistently praise Rock Oyster as a characterful, sea‑driven Island blended malt that “lives and breathes the sea,” with excellent balance between peat smoke, brine, lemon and sweet malt at its price point. Several reviews rate it in the “excellent” tier and highlight it as a great value everyday maritime dram and a strong introduction to island whiskies.
