Winery and Vineyard

Dry River, established in 1979, is one of Martinborough's most iconic pioneering wineries. Renowned for its low-yield, long-lived, and distinctly regionally characteristic Pinot Noir, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Syrah, it has been described by Jancis Robinson as New Zealand's cult winery.

Lovat Vineyard, planted in 1992, is a warmer vineyard in Dry River, situated on ancient river terraces with large gravelly soils at an elevation of approximately 33 meters. This location, influenced by seasonal winds and the heat-absorbing properties of the gravel, helps the Syrah achieve ripe fruit flavors, dark fruit depth, and spice character even in the cooler Martinborough climate.

Wine Style

The 2018 Lovat Syrah displays black pepper, plum, dried prune, dark berries, and multiple layers of spice. It is a medium-bodied rather than full-bodied Syrah, with cool-climate signature notes of violet, black pepper, cinnamon, and delicate herbs, and a well-defined mineral structure.

On the palate, expect blackberry, black cherry, black plum, licorice, and pepper spice. The tannins are fine and powdery, with a soft yet balanced acidity. The finish offers notes of violet, spice, earth, and a salty minerality.

Winemaking and Aging: This Syrah is made from MS clone grapes, typically fermented completely destemmed, and aged in oak barrels. Closer vintage records indicate that the wine was aged for approximately 12 months in 20% new oak hogshead, followed by approximately 6 months in older oak barrels. This process allows the oak to provide structure and spice without masking the cool-climate floral and black pepper characteristics.
