Highland Park Dark Origins is a distinguished core bottling that celebrates the early, illicit distilling days of Magnus Eunson on the Orkney Islands, long before the distillery was officially founded in 1798. By day, Magnus was a butcher and church official; by night, he was a legendary whisky smuggler and distiller, famously outwitting the excisemen of his time.

Cask Maturation & Character

To honor this Orkney hero, Highland Park has crafted a whisky with a suitably rich and "dark" character. The spirit is matured in a bold combination of 80% first-fill sherry casks (comprising 60% first-fill European oak and 20% first-fill American oak) and 20% refill casks. This meticulous cask selection produces an exciting, spicy, and deeply chocolatey whisky that remains true to the distillery's renowned quality.

Tasting Notes

• Nose: Opens with dusty baking spices and cocoa, followed by cinnamon, vanilla, and dates. Notes of coffee and cream chocolates, a touch of blackcurrant and liquorice, butterscotch, and a delightful interplay between milk and dark chocolate.
• Palate: Sweet and fragrant peat emerges beautifully, accompanied by nutty melted milk chocolate, hints of orange, and buttery pastry notes.
• Finish: Long and sweet, featuring a touch of dry chocolate and just a hint of Highland Park's signature heather smoke, leaving a mouth-watering, lingering impression.
