Jane Ventura Finca Els Camps Macabeu
Jané Ventura is a family‑run winery in Penedès, Catalunya, with roots back to 1914, known today for site‑driven wines and organic viticulture expressing the Mediterranean terroir. Finca Els Camps Macabeu is a single‑vineyard white from the Montmell hills at about 400 metres altitude, and is one of the first terroir‑focused Penedès whites made from the traditional Macabeu grape (since 1998). Old, low‑yielding vines and barrel fermentation give intensity, minerality and subtle smokiness over ripe citrus and white fruit.
Vinification & Style
Origin: Spain, Catalunya, Penedès, from Finca Els Camps in the Montmell area (Baix Penedès) at about 400 m above sea level, with cool nights and mild days that favour aromatic development and fresh acidity in white grapes.
Grape variety: 100% Macabeu from three tiny old‑vine parcels separated by dry‑stone walls, planted in 1945, 1958 and 1965, totalling only around 1.2 hectares with very low yields (about 1,500–2,000 kg/ha).
Farming has been organic since 2010, with full cover crops from 2014. Grapes are hand‑harvested in small boxes, cooled, then given a 6‑hour skin maceration at about 10°C before pressing. Fermentation takes place at around 18°C in 2nd–3rd‑fill French oak barrels (two 500‑L and one 300‑L), followed by about 6 months’ aging on lees with bâtonnage to build texture and complexity.
Tasting Notes
Color: Pale lemon with slight golden hues and good legs, indicating ripeness and body.
Aroma: White flowers (acacia), lemon, grapefruit and pomelo, crisp green apple and pear, over a backdrop of light smoky/toasty notes from barrel, plus hints of toasted nuts, vanilla and a chalky mineral edge; refined and layered nose.
Palate: Medium to full‑bodied. Fresh citrus and white fruit lead, supported by bright but rounded acidity. Mid‑palate shows creaminess, toasted almond, white pepper and a subtle smoky note, with a touch of saline minerality. The texture is smooth and slightly oily without heaviness, finishing long with lingering citrus, flowers and stone‑mineral character.
