Jane Ventura Finca Els Camps Negre

Jané Ventura is a family winery in Penedès, Catalunya, with a winemaking tradition dating back to 1914, now focused on single‑vineyard, organically farmed wines that express Mediterranean terroir. Finca Els Camps Negre comes from the Finca Els Camps vineyard in the Montmell hills at around 400 m altitude, on limestone soils. Made from a Mediterranean red blend (principally Garnatxa, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon), it sits at 14% ABV and combines ripe red and black fruit with dry flowers, herbs, spice and a mineral backbone—structured yet elegant.

Vinification & Style
Origin: Spain, Catalunya, Penedès, from Finca Els Camps in La Joncosa del Montmell, at about 400 metres above sea level on limestone soils with a loamy structure and abundant limestone nodules, offering excellent drainage.

Grape varieties: Mediterranean red blend, mainly Garnatxa Negra, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon (exact proportions vary by vintage), from low‑yielding vines. Grapes are hand‑picked and vinified by parcel and variety.

Fermented in temperature‑controlled stainless‑steel tanks with moderate maceration to extract colour and fine tannins, then aged in predominantly used French oak barrels for around 12 months, followed by bottle aging, aiming for a balance of fruit, florals, spice and minerality rather than heavy new oak.

Tasting Notes
Color: Deep ruby with purple highlights; dense but bright.

Aroma: A mix of red and black fruits—red cherry, red berries, blackberry and blackcurrant—with notes of blackcurrant jam and cherry preserve. Layered with dried flowers, Mediterranean herbs (thyme, rosemary), liquorice, black pepper and clove, plus subtle earth and mineral tones; complex yet refined.

Palate: Medium to full‑bodied, fresh and structured. Concentrated red and black fruit with lively acidity and ripe, fine‑grained tannins. Mid‑palate shows black pepper, liquorice, dried herbs and a touch of smokiness and minerality. At 14% ABV it feels warm but not heavy, finishing long with red fruit, spice and dried‑flower notes.

Reviews & Accolades
Guía Peñín rates the 2020 vintage at 89 points, describing the style as “flores secas, especiado, equilibrado, hierbas secas, maduro” (dried flowers, spicy, balanced, with dried herbs and ripe character).

Vivino users note that it is “fresh and full‑bodied on both nose and palate, with red and black fruits, blackcurrant and cherry jam; a fine distinctive touch rounds the wine on the palate,” underlining both freshness and generosity.

Decanting: 45–60 minutes
Serving Temperature: 16–18°C
Food Pairing: Grilled lamb rack, black pepper beef, braised beef short ribs, roast suckling pig, roast spring chicken, herb‑crusted lamb shoulder, pan‑seared steak with rosemary, charcuterie and smoked sausages, cured ham, hard cheeses (Manchego, Comté)

Special Info: Alongside the Finca Els Camps Macabeu, Finca Els Camps Negre is one of Jané Ventura’s key terroir wines, showcasing the same high‑altitude, limestone‑rich site through a Mediterranean red blend. Organic farming, low yields and careful oak use keep the wine fresh and mineral despite its 14% ABV, with limited production making it a compelling option for those exploring characterful, site‑driven Catalan reds.

Origin: Spain, Catalunya, Penedès
Type: Red Wine
Grape Variety: Mediterranean blend
ABV: 14%
Volume: 750ml
