Jean-Louis Chave Winery Introduction

Located in Hermitage, in the Northern Rhône, Jean-Louis Chave is one of the most historic and representative family wineries in the region. The Chave family has been making wine in the Hermitage area since 1481, and this tradition is continued by Jean-Louis Chave and other family members. Their wines are known for their precision, depth, minerality, and exceptional aging potential.

J.L. Chave Sélection is a more accessible range from the Chave family's collection. The grapes are primarily sourced from different plots in the Hermitage hills, and the winery treats them with the same winemaking philosophy. Sélection Hermitage Blanche is not a typical Côtes du Rhône white wine, but rather a wine made from grapes from the Hermitage appellation, possessing considerable terroir and aging potential.

2021 Vintage Analysis

J.L. Chave Sélection Hermitage Blanche 2021 is a Northern Rhône white wine, primarily Marsanne with accents of Roussanne. The grapes come from older vines on the Hermitage hills, with those in the Maison Blanche plot exceeding 60 years old, contributing ripe fruit flavors, an oily texture, and good depth.

The 2021 Hermitage white wine is generally fresher, brighter, and mineral-oriented, less heavy or overly sweet than in warmer vintages. Aromas showcase white peach, yellow apple, quince, citrus peel, honeysuckle, acacia blossom, almond, and a touch of smoky minerality; some tasting notes also mention slight reductive notes, flint, and graphite, adding complexity.

On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, rich in texture with a slight oiliness, but bright core acidity keeps the wine fresh, precise, and firm. Marsanne offers notes of ripe yellow fruit, honey, and almond, while Roussanne adds floral, spicy, and aromatic layers. The finish has a distinct salty-mineral character, with a long and powerful aftertaste.

The 2021 vintage is drinkable now, but still young; it is recommended to allow ample air after opening. Professional connoisseurs believe it has at least 10–20 years of development potential, gradually revealing third layers of aromas such as beeswax, honey, quince, almond, dried flowers, and smoky minerals with aging.
