Kopke Fine Ruby Port
Kopke Fine Ruby Port is the classic entry‑level ruby from Kopke, the oldest Port house (founded in 1638), made under DOC Porto from a Touriga Nacional‑based blend of traditional Douro grapes and aged around 3 years in large vats. It shows deep ruby colour, vivid black and red berry fruit, chocolate and vanilla notes, firm but smooth structure and about 19.5% ABV, offering a rich yet approachable ruby Port style.
Vinification & Style
The wine is based on Touriga Nacional with Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão grown on schist‑sandstone soils at around 600 metres, giving ripe fruit with freshness and aromatic intensity. Grapes undergo classic Port vinification: maceration and fermentation in stainless‑steel vats at 28–30°C with frequent pumping‑over for colour, tannin and flavour extraction, before fortification with grape spirit at the desired sweetness level to stop fermentation. The fortified wine then ages for a minimum of about 3 years in large wooden vats, preserving youthful fruit while gaining some complexity; final blends are assembled from several lots to deliver a consistent Kopke Fine Ruby style at roughly 19.5% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep ruby with a garnet halo, dense and youthful.
Nose: Classic, lively ruby Port bouquet with ripe black cherry, blackberry, blueberry and cassis, supported by red berries, hints of raisin, plus chocolate, cocoa, vanilla and a touch of liquorice and sweet spice.
Palate: Full‑bodied and firm, yet smooth. Flavours of fresh black and red fruits (black cherry, blackberry jam, blueberry, sour cherry) dominate, balanced by good acidity and well‑integrated alcohol; tannins are present but soft. Mid‑palate reveals cocoa, dark chocolate, subtle coffee and vanilla notes with a little spice, giving richness without heaviness.
Finish: Medium‑long, with lingering berry fruit, chocolate and gentle spice, and a warm, harmonious aftertaste.
Serving & Pairing
Serving temperature: 12–14°C; serve slightly chilled to highlight the fruit and keep the sweetness in check.
After opening: Store upright in a cool, dark place and enjoy within about 1 year; unopened bottles can be kept around 3 years under good conditions.
Food pairing (HK‑friendly)
Special Info: Kopke Fine Ruby Port is positioned as the house’s classic ruby reference, showcasing young, fruit‑driven Port with firm structure and balance, and is often recommended not only for sipping on its own but also as a base for Port cocktails like Port & Tonic or simple highballs; tasters frequently describe it as “firm and powerful in the mouth, with fresh fruit flavours and a long, harmonious finish.”
