Kopke Fine Tawny Port
Kopke Fine Tawny Port is a classic entry‑level tawny from Kopke, the oldest Port house founded in 1638, made under DOC Porto from selected Douro grapes and aged on average 4–7 years in wood. It shows an orange‑brown tawny colour, ripe and honeyed fruit aromas with vanilla and nut notes, and a smooth, rounded palate with sweet but well‑balanced flavours, making it ideal as an aperitif or dessert Port.
Vinification & Style
The wine is produced from a blend of traditional Douro varieties, notably Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão, sourced from different vineyard parcels in the Douro Superior and Cima Corgo. Grapes are fermented on skins in vats, and when roughly half of the natural sugar has been converted to alcohol, grape spirit is added to fortify the wine and stop fermentation, preserving sweetness. The young Port then ages for about 4–7 years in vats and casks of various sizes, where gradual oxidation develops nutty, caramel and dried‑fruit complexity while retaining a good core of fruit; the final Fine Tawny is a blend of different lots to achieve a consistent, soft and approachable house style, at about 19–19.5% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Vivid orangey‑brown / honey‑brown with reddish reflections, clear and bright, typical of a young tawny.
Nose: Ripe, honeyed fruit with notes of dried fruits (raisins, prunes), orange peel and apricot, combined with vanilla, caramel and butterscotch, plus roasted‑nut nuances such as almonds and hazelnuts and a touch of warm spice.
Palate: Soft, round and medium‑bodied, with a rich, enveloping sweetness that remains in balance thanks to fresh acidity and well‑integrated spirit. Flavours of honey, caramel, dried fruits and roasted nuts dominate, with hints of vanilla and gentle spice, giving a seductive but not cloying profile.
Finish: Medium to fairly long, with lingering caramel, orange peel, nut and honey notes, and a warm, harmonious aftertaste.
Serving & Pairing
Serving temperature: 12–14°C; serve slightly chilled to tighten the sweetness and highlight freshness.
Once opened: Best consumed within 4–6 months if stored upright in a cool, dark place.

Special Info: Kopke’s Fine Tawny is positioned as the house’s classic, fruit‑forward tawny, combining young, assertive fruit with the nutty, caramel complexity of several years’ cask aging; critics often describe it as soft, full‑bodied and “rich and warming,” offering excellent value as an introduction to both Kopke and tawny Port.
