Winery and Vineyard

Kumeu River is a representative winery of New Zealand's Chardonnay, particularly renowned for its near-Burgundy style, combining barrel aging qualities, minerality, and delicate acidity. Maté’s Vineyard is one of the winery's four core single-vineyard Chardonnays, and one of its most significant and age-worthy plots.

The vineyard was replanted in 1990 by Maté Brajkovich using 100% Mendoza clone Chardonnay. Located in a north-facing, relatively protected low-lying area, it typically exhibits higher ripeness; the low yield of the vines also contributes to a more concentrated, richer, and more expansive character than other single-vineyard wines.

Maté’s Vineyard is not typically a one-time finisher Chardonnay. Younger vintages can be decanted for about 30 minutes or paired with food; ideally, it should be enjoyed 3–5 years after release, and with proper storage, it can age for over 10 years. Reviews from similar years generally agree that it has a long maturation potential and will gradually develop aromas of honey, roasted nuts, cream, smoky minerals, and more complex bottle-aged notes.
