Description
Le Petit Havt Lafitte 2017(RP90)
By Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 90
Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Le Petit Haut Lafitte delivers a slightly broody nose of tar, new leather and truffles over an emerging core of warm plums, mulberries and boysenberries with a touch of anise. Medium-bodied, the palate offers loads of black cherries and savory hints with a plush frame and earthy finish.
92 James Suckling
A red with very good structure and balance and a solid center palate framed by firm tannins. More tension. Fresh finish.
93 Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The 2017 Le Petit Haut Lafitte is a gorgeous second wine. This Cabernet Sauvignon-based red bristles with Cabernet energy, tension and structure. Grilled herbs. licorice, new leather and blueberry jam are vivid in the glass, but it is the wine's vertical structure that stands out most. The 2017 finishes with notable character and personality. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.
Notes:
Elegant aromas of smoke, pepper and vanilla, with hints of violets, blackberries, cassis and a hint of blackcurrant. The tannins at the entrance are delicate and smooth, and the well-balanced berry flavor complements the subsequent coffee, dark chocolate, and core flavors. The aftertaste is long and the style is elegant and balanced.
This time we introduce the second-label wine of this winery. The blend ratio is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The wine is fermented in stainless steel barrels and then aged in oak barrels for 14 months. It is worth mentioning that in terms of grape selection, Le Petit Haut Lafitte uses the same quality selected grapes as the original wine, but uses more Merlot in the blending ratio, so many people say that this wine is quite close to the original. The winery’s cost-effective second-label wine is definitely a must-try.
Story
Le Petit Haut Lafitte is the second wine of Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte, a famous classified winery in the Pessac-Leognan region. The winery is located in the village of Martillac in the Pessac-Leognan district south of Bordeaux. The manor was first founded by the Bosq family in 1365 and has a very long history. In the 18th century, a Scottish businessman, George Smith, bought the manor and put his name on the winery. By 1842, Mr. Duffour-Dubergier, the mayor of Bordeaux, inherited the manor from his mother. Under his family management, the winery was raised to a very high level and reputation. Therefore, when the Graves Grand Cru was selected in the 1950s, the red wine of Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte was also on the list.
However, the high level of performance of the winery in recent years can be attributed to the current winery owners Daniel Cathiard and Florence Cathiard. After purchasing the winery in 1990, they continued to promote the improvement of the quality of the winery with their determination, including investing heavily in winemaking. With the updating of equipment, the recruitment of many master winemaking consultants for guidance, the adoption of organic planting methods in the vineyards, etc., the wine quality has been significantly improved since the late 1990s, and it has become the most outstanding Bordeaux star. wine.
