Maison Marchand Tawse Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavieres 2019

Formerly known as Domaine Maume, this Gevrey-Chambertin estate was purchased by Canadian entrepreneur Moray Tawse in 2011 and has since experienced a significant transformation. From the newly biodynamic vineyards to the more 'natural' style of minimal intervention winemaking, using lower doses of Sulphur and very little chaptalisation, the re-branded Domaine Marchand-Tawse is the Cote de Nuits' Rising Star. English winemaker Mark Fincham, formerly of Domaine de Pegau, is dedicated to fashioning elegant wines with a more modern lightness of touch, which are far more ready-to-drink in their youth than the former, rustic style.

Made with 40% whole bunches and 20% new wood. Energetic mid purple. Also lots of energy on the nose too, very lifted floral and with ripe cherry notes on top of glossy raspberries. Very enticing. Fills the mouth, especially at the front, floral style again, some light tannins behind, good length, not quite the power behind as at the start. Tasted: November 2020

Burghound

Perfumed, elegant and appealingly layered aromas consist mostly of various red berries that are laced with floral, earth and spice nuances. There is excellent underlying tension to the middle weight flavors that exude a lovely salinity on the youthfully austere, firm and somewhat linear finish. This will need a few years to add both depth and to flesh out more. This is very Lavières in character and worth a look.
