Montevertine Winery Introduction

Located in Radda in Chianti, Tuscany, Italy, Montevertine is one of Italy's classic Super Tuscan wineries. Founded in 1967 by Sergio Manetti, the winery initially produced wines under the Chianti Classico name. However, unwilling to be bound by the then-existing DOCG regulations and insisting on using a higher proportion of Sangiovese, it withdrew from the Chianti Classico Consortium in 1982, and its wines were subsequently labeled Toscana IGT.

Montevertine's flagship wine, "Montevertine," is considered the winery's most representative work: not relying on excessively modern oak or international varieties, but rather showcasing the acidity, herbaceous notes, red fruit, and minerality of the Tuscan mountains through Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Colorino.

2021 Vintage Description

Montevertine Toscana Rosso 2021 comes from approximately 2.5 hectares of south- to southeast-facing vineyards, with the vines primarily planted in 1982. This wine is a blend of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, and 5% Colorino. It was fermented in cement tanks, then aged in large Slovenian oak barrels for approximately 24 months, followed by bottle aging for about 3 months.

The 2021 vintage exhibits a distinct Tuscan mountain style: aromas are dominated by red cherry, raspberry, red currant, and blueberry, with hints of rose petals, violet, juniper berries, licorice, ferns, forest floor, and minerality. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with crisp and dynamic acidity, fine, slightly powdery tannins, and a savory blend of red fruit and herbs throughout the mid-palate.

This wine does not strive for fullness or sweetness, but rather for clarity, linearity, and precision. The 2021 vintage is described as vibrant, balanced, and with good aging potential. It is drinkable now, but requires time after opening for the floral, spicy, and earthy layers to fully develop.
