Story
Nicolas Potel grew up at Domaine de la Pousse d’Or in the village of Volnay, where his father, Gérard Potel, is the winery’s operations manager. Influenced by his father, young Nicolas also embarked on the path of becoming a winemaker and planned to inherit his father's winery business. Unfortunately, Gérard Potel died young, which made the owner of the winery consider retiring and sell the winery to someone else. As a result, Nicolas had no choice but to leave in 1997 with nothing. However, the solidarity and mutual assistance of the Burgundians helped Nicolas Potel, who sold grapes and wine to him, enabling him to establish the wine business of Maison Nicolas Potel in 1998.
Maison Nicolas Potel's wines come from purchased grapes and pre-made wines. Nicolas Potel has created a unique style with old-fashioned winemaking and cellaring techniques: grapes are fermented immediately upon arrival in the cellar, sulfide is used to a minimum, and Brussels Aged in 228L wooden barrels to bring out a soft flavor. Therefore, Nicolas Potel has made a name for himself with his rich and round grapes from the best vineyard plots in the Côte de Nuits.
In 1999, Maison Nicolas Potel already had more than 80 wines, which rose to 100 in 2001 and 120 in 2002, from 50 different regions of the Côte d’Or. Potel also has production plans in Beaujolais. The Nicolas Potel wine label means that the bottle contains excellent Bourgogne red wine, whether it is the broad-based Bourgogne or the Grand Cru wines of the Côte de Nuits, the quality is equally outstanding. Respecting the terroir of the vineyard and showcasing the characteristics of the vintage are the hallmarks of Maison Nicolas Potel, while at the same time selling it to consumers at affordable prices without the goal of making a profit. The current production this year is about 300,000 bottles. Although Nicolas Potel left the wine company he founded in 2008 to start a new career, Maison Nicolas Potel still maintains a high standard and quality of production under the handover of the new winemaker.
