Pittyvaich 28 Year Old 1989 (Special Release 2018) is an extremely rare Speyside single malt from a now-closed distillery.

It's a highly regarded release in the Diageo 2018 Special Releases series, with an ABV of 52.1%.

Distillery: Pittyvaich (established in 1974, closed in 1993, a typical "short-lived ghost distillery").

Region: Speyside.

Vintage: Distilled in 1989, bottled in 2018, labeled 28 years.

Series: Diageo Special Releases 2018.

ABV: 52.1% (cask strength).

Casing: Refilled American oak hogsheads.

Number of Bottles: Approximately 4,680 bottles, limited release.

Aroma (Nose): Herbal, waxy, with a hint of earth; "post-rain earth" (petrichor), hay, chalk/mineral notes.

Lemon, orange peel, citrus essential oils, combined with honey, white flowers, honey mandarin, coconut, and a touch of nuts and vanilla.

Palate: Medium-bodied but silky smooth, dominated by citrus, vanilla, malt, and vanilla sweetness.

Herbal tobacco leaves, mint, green herbs, a hint of menthol/mint candy, plus minerality and spices (ginger, pepper, licorice).

Mid-palate reveals orange oil, dried lemon peel, orange cream, almond syrup, apple shortbread, raisins, with a touch of saltiness, adding complexity.

Finish: Very long, with notes of mint, herbs, roasted cocoa husks, and roasted barley tea (some critics specifically mentioned "boricha/barley tea" notes).

The finish is smooth and sweet, making you almost doubt how many layers of spiciness there were before, and the ending is very elegant.
