Winery Background

Alión Winery is located in Ribera del Duero, approximately 15 kilometers from Vega Sicilia Winery. The brand's first vintage was launched in 1991, initially produced at Vega Sicilia. Since 1993, Alión has owned its own winemaking facilities and has gradually developed a more modern, concentrated, and fruit-dominant Ribera del Duero style.

Although Alión and Vega Sicilia belong to the same family winery, Alión is not a second label of Vega Sicilia Único, but rather a wine with its own distinct positioning: a more modern style, more direct fruit flavors, and centered around the rich fruit aromas, minerality, and fine tannins of Tinto Fino.

Ratings and Aging

The 2016 Alión received 95 points from Robert Parker; other reviews also described it as a particularly fresh, elegant, and balanced vintage. James Suckling's comments highlighted berries, chocolate, dried meat, cedar, pure fruit flavors, and a long finish.

It is drinkable now, but still has mature tannins and oak structure. Decanting for about 1–2 hours after opening is recommended. With proper storage, it still has great aging potential, developing leather, tobacco, truffle, dried flowers, and more tertiary aromas over time.
