Wolfburn Aurora Single Malt Scotch Whisky Miniature 50ml
Wolfburn Aurora is the sherry‑accented core expression from Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso, Scotland’s northernmost mainland distillery, bottled at 46% ABV, non‑chill filtered and naturally coloured. Matured in a mix of ex‑bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, it offers honey, orchard and tropical fruits, gentle dried‑fruit and nut notes and a touch of coffee and chocolate, here in a convenient 50ml miniature for tasting or gifting.
Production & Style
Aurora is made, matured and bottled at Wolfburn as a Highland single malt. The spirit is filled into three main cask types: around 40% refill quarter casks (American and Spanish oak), 40% first‑fill ex‑bourbon barrels and 20% first‑fill Oloroso sherry hogsheads of 225–250 litres. Long fermentation and slow distillation build a fruity, malty spirit, which then matures on‑site before the casks are married to create a balanced whisky where sherry sweetness complements, rather than overwhelms, the light Highland profile; it is bottled at 46% ABV, non‑chill filtered and at natural colour.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Pale gold to light amber, lighter than heavily sherried malts, reflecting a more restrained sherry influence.
Nose: The official note describes “sherry sweetness followed by freshly cut grass and autumn fruits, with just a hint of coffee and dark chocolate,” showing gentle sherry, orchard fruits and subtle darker tones. Independent tasters add melon with honey, malt biscuits, salted caramel, nuts and faint tobacco or spice, with the sherry casks giving nuance rather than dominance.
Palate: Quite sweet and malty to start, with vanilla, honey, canned fruits (peach), melon and stone‑fruit notes, plus some raisin and dried‑fruit hints and ginger/white‑pepper spice that gently warms the palate. The body is medium, smooth and rounded, with bourbon casks bringing vanilla and coconut touches, while the Oloroso casks contribute mild dried‑fruit and nutty tones.
Finish: Light‑to‑medium length, drying slightly with apple peels, grape skins, honey and malt, and soft sherry tones echoing to the end.
Serving & Pairing
Serving temperature: Around 16–20°C.

Special Info: Launched in 2016, Aurora is Wolfburn’s dedicated “sherry cask” core bottling, designed not as a heavy sherry bomb but as a fresh, malty Highland whisky with a gentle sherry accent, making it a strong option for drinkers who enjoy some sherry character while still wanting a light, clean profile.
