Wolfburn Northland Single Malt Scotch Whisky Miniature 50ml
Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso is Scotland’s northernmost mainland distillery, revived in 2013 and known for small‑scale, hands‑on production, natural colour and non‑chill filtration. Northland is its flagship core expression, a lightly peated Highland single malt bottled at 46% and matured entirely in ex‑Islay American oak quarter casks, combining gentle smoke, coastal freshness, malt and honey in a compact, 50ml miniature format ideal for tasting or gifting.
Production & Style
Northland is produced, matured and bottled on site in Thurso, Scotland, as an official Wolfburn single malt. The whisky is made from malted barley infused with light peat (around 10ppm), fermented slowly and distilled gently to preserve fruit and malt character, then filled into ex‑Islay American oak quarter casks of about 100 litres. Maturation in these small casks accelerates interaction with the wood, bringing softness, vanilla and a subtle smoky, maritime edge even at a relatively young age; the whisky is bottled at 46% ABV, non‑chill filtered and naturally coloured, positioned as a “lightly peated, coastal Highland” all‑rounder.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Pale straw to light gold, clear and natural in appearance.
Nose: Initially sweet and fresh, with apples, pears, barley sugar and honey, plus fresh sea air; citrus and cereal notes follow, with just a trace of peat smoke and a yeasty, bready hint in the background.
Palate: Medium‑bodied and smooth, with sweet, nutty tones up front and flavours of honey, malt, grapes and light dried fruits. Floral notes and gentle spices appear, alongside subtle earthy peat, coastal notes and soft wood smoke, giving complexity without heaviness.
Finish: Long and fresh, with lingering rich honey notes, soft spice and a fade of light peat smoke and sea‑breeze salinity.
Serving & Pairing
Serving temperature: Around 16–20°C.
How to drink:
Special Info: Northland is regarded as the “first chapter” in Wolfburn’s modern story and has earned praise for delivering a surprisingly mature, coastal‑smoky profile for a young whisky, thanks to its ex‑Islay quarter‑cask maturation and careful distillation, making it a very approachable introduction to the distillery’s style.
