Product Description

This whisky is not part of Suntory's regular product line. It was specially commissioned by Club Yamana, a long-established private club in Osaka's Kitashinchi district, and distilled by Yamazaki Distillery to celebrate the 90th birthday of its owner, Ms. Kazue Yamana. The master blender personally mixed the spirit, making it a limited-edition, non-public release exclusively for the club's internal circulation; very few remain on the market.

Club Yamana is open only to members, requiring a referral guarantee and a fixed annual membership fee. The club primarily hosts social elites and business leaders, with strict dress codes—regardless of membership or staff, everyone must wear a kimono except on special occasions. It is precisely this semi-closed, exclusive nature of the club that has resulted in this whisky rarely being released from its production date, almost destined to be opened only at birthday banquets.

Established in 1923 in Yamazaki, a suburb of Osaka, by Kotobukiya (the predecessor of Suntory), founded by Shinjiro Torii, Yamazaki Distillery is Japan's first commercial whisky distillery and is revered as the "birthplace of Japanese whisky." Its location is meticulously chosen: situated at the confluence of the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu rivers, the area is perpetually humid and shrouded in mist, known as "the water of the imperial palace," with crystal-clear water, a renowned source of water for the Japanese tea ceremony.

The distillery boasts six different types of stills and a large quantity of various oak casks, including Mizunara oak, sherry, and bourbon. It is renowned for its blending philosophy of "a symphony of different types of spirits," creating a remarkably rich and complex flavor profile. In 2003, Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky won its first international award, and subsequently garnered numerous accolades at international competitions such as the ISC and WWA, truly propelling Japanese whisky onto the world stage.
